International Workshops 20-27 July 2024, Dronero - Italy
An innovative workshop that brings together Architecture and Commedia dell’Arte. Working with international architects and actors. Participants can choose between two options:
ARCHITECTURE
This international workshop aims to employ locally sourced natural materials and vernacular earthen building techniques in the design and building of a small open-air theatre for the local community. It will take place in tandem with a Commedia dell’ arte theatre workshop and the two groups will share workshop facilities and accommodation space. During the design process the participants will get feedback from the theatrical team and will construct the stage to host their performance in the end of the workshop.
Workshop structure
The workshop consists of two parts:
THEORETICAL: Lectures on vernacular architecture
PRACTICAL: reconnaissance, design workshop, construction (foundation building, mud-brick making, plastering)
Eligibility
This workshop is open to architects, engineers, artists, craftsmen and design enthusiasts.
COMMEDIA DELL'ARTE:
The workshop aims a thorough understanding of the Commedia dell’Arte families of masks. The mask (as the character and not the scenic object) is the key element of the work. It is the primary instrument of expression: physical structure, gestures, behavior.
The aim of the workshops is to explore and learn about the nature of the different characters of the various masks. We will present the masks, their meaning and their role, later the students will be able to use the different types of masks and learn the different techniques.

BRIEF HISTORY: Origins and decay of the Commedia dell’Arte
PICTURES: meanings, types, technical. Setting gestural and interpretation
FIXED CHARACTERS: Zanni, Captains, Oldmen, Lovers
IMPOROVISATION AND COMEDY: discipline and profession of COMMEDIA DELL’ARTE actor
SCENARIOS: recurring themes, mask contrasts, “canovaccio” staging
Eligibility
The workshop is aimed at anyone with basic theater training and for anyone have already had stage experience, professional and non-professional actors.

Claudia lavora all'Università di Liverpool, dove collabora con il centro di ricerca ArCHIAM (Architecture and Cultural Heritage in India, Arabia and the Maghreb) e contribuisce all’insegnamento nei corsi di tecnologia dell’architettura, progettazione, gestione del patrimonio architettonico e sviluppo sostenibile. In ArCHIAM, Claudia gestice progetti per il riuso adattivo di edifici tradizionali in Oman, collabora alla progettazione di mostre su contenuti di ricerca e contribuisce alla documentazione di insediamenti vernacolari in Oman, Marocco e India. La sua ricerca è inerente a tematiche riguardanti l’architettura vernacolare, il patrimonio culturale e l’urbanismo informale sulle zone costiere dell’Oceano Indiano.
Dopo la laurea presso la Nottingham Trent University, Matina ha lavorato in studi di architettura ad Atene e Kyparissia, in Grecia. Nel 2014 si è iscritta all’Ordine degli Architetti e nel 2016 ha fondato il proprio studio di progettazione concentrandosi sulla partecipazione della comunità al design. Da allora ha organizzato numerosi workshop di architettura e costruzione in Grecia e Spagna, per studenti e professionisti, oltre che per bambini. Gli interessi di ricerca di Matina ruotano attorno allo studio dei materiali naturali e delle tecniche di costruzione tradizionali, nonché al progresso dell'artigianato attraverso progetti di collaborazione che coinvolgono le comunità locali e le parti interessate. Matina è attualmente ricercatrice presso l'Università di Liverpool - parte del Centro di ricerca ArCHIAM (Architecture and Cultural Heritage of India, Arabia and the Maghreb) - e tutor di progettazione presso la Liverpool School of Architecture.
Lavora da diversi anni nella sua personale ricerca nel teatro tradizionale italiano ed europeo, studiando le maschere, i caratteri e la comicità in generale. Per raggiungere questo obiettivo conduce una profonda ricerca su documentazione e materiali, conduce intensi allenamenti con gruppi di attori sulla CDA. Grazie agli incontri con altre compagnie teatrali e gruppi musicali organizza workshop e spettacoli di Commedia dell'Arte. Esporta spettacoli in tutto il mondo offrendo
laboratori di Commedia dell'Arte anche in contesti internazionali.
